Blog post no. 19: It’s not about motivation, it’s about knowing why you must.
“Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it.” — Martin Luther King Jr.
Yesterday was Martin Luther King Jr. Day and this is what I’ve come to realize:
This world and time needs artists more than ever.
This world is yearning for authenticity and awkward, humane, guts out honesty like oxygen. We need fresh air. Somebody needs to stand up for something. For love. For people. Not for fame. Not for clicks. Not for money. For the sake of humanity.
And who would be the first to do it if not artists?
Politicians maybe? Athletes?
Entrepreneurs? Bloggers?
Exactly.
Artist is the one who is sensitive enough to feel more subtle yet stronger.
Artist is the one who is outsider enough to see things from a different perspective.
Artist is the one with the urge and capability to bring things from the world of ideas and emotions into this reality.
Artist is the one who is not (at least so much) tied to the social pressure and imaginary chains of how one should live, think and behave in order to fit in.
Artist is the one who is most vulnerable and thus the most powerful.
But artists must also use that power.
I think I’ve found my reasons. My meaning to create. And this revelation about the necessity of artists for this era is a crucial piece I have needed to really understand it. To understand my responsibility in this world, and of this world.
Ernest Hemingway said, “Write hard and clear about what hurts.” That’s what I’ve been trying to do and will keep on trying in the future.
We need fresh air.
